Tommy boy has been due a goal all season unless I missed one?

Tommy Boy is due a goal, Sir Alf.

You could be eating some humble pie ....

After averaging 10 touches of the ball, Tommy improved to 20 against Arsenal albeit a fair few unsuccessful ones.

I see he is in the top 5 for aerial duels in defence and tackles too. He did a last ditch one at Arsenal for example that stopped Saka I think?

This must be the reason he plays. Of course the counter argument is that if we kept the ball better ( he and others although he’s the worst offender, didn’t give it away so much ) we wouldn’t need so many defensive tackles or headers from corners / free kicks conceded.

So that confirms what we already know. Moyes would rather place emphasis on defending and is not interested or able to coach a side to keep it and pass and move much better to avoid having to defend so much :-)

It’s the trait of teams and managers who “spoil” first.

Anyway, assuming he starts against Bournemouth, how many touches of the ball? Hmmmm I say about 12 and 7 successful / completed passes.

Hahaha! Good point. He does need to actually be dropped in order for meaningful comparison

El Scorchio

I don’t think he’s ever been dropped so no comparison can be made. The only games he doesn’t start this year are the Conference ones and we haven’t lost one yet.

There is a value to players that run and close space but not the same value for one that is so very slow. He’s kind of a big oversized tall traffic cone / dustbin so I guess he can cast a shadow and opposition players steer it away ? He gets the odd decent tackle in and around the box. Last 2 games I noticed 2 or 3 crucial tackles but other do that too.

We can only guess Moyes loves the extra aerial strength he gives us defending corners and occupying their defenders when we have set pieces ? The latter makes room for others and the defending part is evidenced by us being one if not the best at defending corners and set pieces.

Of course a mobile footballer with passing ability and able to trap a bag of cement would potentially avoid having to concede and defend so much.

Nah I just cannot fathom why he always starts. It’s fvckwittery of the highest order imho

Just out of interest, and saying this with no thought one way or the other on Soucek, but is there a comparison somewhere of our results or average ppg with him in the team vs not in the team? Only thing I can think of is that somehow this is higher when he's included, even if it seems like it shouldn't be, which is why Moyes persists.

Re: Soucek: a useless, lumbering, beanpole. Why pick him?
A new BFSesque tactic from Moyes yesterday was for Soucek, Bowen and MICK to club together for goal kicks and have Fabianski boot it to them.

Rarely successful as Soucek never won much but a new tactic nonetheless.

Maybe Moyes had some kind of footballing stroke in the summer and is doing the equivalent of learning to walk again.

Expect that trio to do a lot more of that over the next few games.

There was a STAT that he was 3rd in ground covered, just before the world cup.

He must run around trying to avoid the ball given he barely touches it.

***24 minutes***

Re: Soucek: a useless, lumbering, beanpole. Why pick him?
I particularly watched Soucek and there's no doubt that he covers well and blocks space in front of our defence. Unfortunately he does very little because he doesn't get a foot in and tackle.

But he does restrict the space in front of our CB's. Downes is so much more mobile that he would often be further forward. I can only surmise that Moyes sticks with Thomas because he's dependably there blocking space. According to Who Scored he touched the ball only 22 times - lowest on field by far including Arsenal!

Arsenal's Trossard came on at 66th minute and had 5 more touches than Thomas in the 2 minutes he was on for example...

Weird how the guy gets picked

He won two aerial duels.

He touched the ball 21 times today (four less times than Fabianski). #impact

Was our worst outfield player according to the ratings on whoscored (however they work that out).

10 completed passes all game still isn't enough for a central midfielder, if we're honest.

Re: Soucek: a useless, lumbering, beanpole. Why pick him?
He got stuck in, pressed up the pitch, tackled and won the odd aerial 50/50. Like Rice and Paqueta, he put in a proper shift to make this a competitive fixture. Was he immense? Well, let’s just say he was immensely better than most of this season.

Important block to stop them scoring. Thats what he does, we want more, but should acknowledge what he does.
